When you move home it's not just you who is moving. Of course in many cases you will also be moving a family and your pets, but this aspect of the move is likely fairly easy and in terms of mass at least this is only a very small part of the battle. The thing that will be most difficult and the most work moving will be your property and your belongings and that means a lot of different things.

When you are moving home you will need to move your pictures, your crockery, your appliances, your television, your computer... even your furniture... and this really won't be an easy job. This is why it's always a good idea to use moving services who can help you by using good lifting technique, packing your things so that they will remain protected, fitting them logically into the moving van, and doing the driving for you so that you don't even need to worry about that.

However even with a moving service other problems can still occur and these are inherent in the difficulty of selling, buying, renting or leasing property. When you buy property for instance, often the purchase you have made on other property won't have gone through yet. This then essentially means that you are moving out of your home, but that there is no home yet to move into. In other cases it might be that you are moving somewhere to downscale in which case your belongings simply won't fit into your home. In other cases you will be moving when you didn't have anywhere to live previously – because you were evicted or because your house burned down in a fire... which would leave you with the problem of what to do with all your stuff in the interim. You can stay at a hotel or at a friend's house, but chances are that neither the hotel nor your friends would be as willing for your grand piano and collection of paintings to come with you too.

This is where self storage comes in. Self storage is essentially the name given to the large storage units that people use to store their belongings when they don't want them or can't have them in their home. You pay rent just as you do for a property, but you can't sleep there and can only keep your belongings there. In the situations listed above then you would check yourself into a hotel and then send your belongings with a moving service to a storage unit.

To do this find a storage unit that is near your home and make sure that there is enough space for everything you have – if necessary you can have more than one storage unit. Then simply tell your moving company to move the belongings there instead. In some cases you might even choose this situation even when you have room in your home as it gives you time to carefully plan where you want your things to go and you can finalise the moving at your leisure.
